Wireline Will Survive Wireless Onslaught
Asia-Pac Broadband Subs to Hit 182 Million This Year, Says Frost & Sullivan.
Note that F&S states that both wireline broadband (fixed in their nomenclature) and mobile broadband are growing, and analyst Adeel Najaam expects fixed broadband to continue growing. The two technologies appear to be largely complementary rather than strict substitutes.
A useful but not perfect analogy is wireline and wireless phones. While there has been some erosion of wireline telephony penetration, the total market for both is much, much larger than just what the wireline market used to be. Smart carriers like AT&T and Verizon have benefited from this expanded market for voice communications.
Like wireline telephony, wireline broadband provides increased quality but little mobility. However, wireline broadband provides substantially larger throughput than does wireless broadband today, and this will continue owing to differences in the methods of delivery. Although there will be some limited erosion of wireline broadband from wireless technologies, wireline broadband will continue to be more resilient to competition from wireless transmission than telephony has been.
