Qwest to Leap Ahead With 100 Gbps

Qwest LogoQwest is planning to grow their network with 100 Gbps links on Alcatel-Lucent equipment.  At the edge, Qwest will be using Alcatel-Lucent’s 7750 Service Router.  In the core, Qwest will be using Alcatel-Lucent’s 1625 LambdaXtreme Transport platform.  Since Alcatel-Lucent does not plan to release these 100 Gbps interface cards to production until next year, Qwest will have to wait, but Qwest intends to be first to sell 100 Gbps services.  A Tier 1 carrier by most accounts, Qwest serves 145 markets across the US.

From Qwest’s press release,

Michael Howard, principal analyst, carrier and data center networks, Infonetics Research: “Internet traffic keeps growing, however service providers need to make money. For this, they not only need higher speeds and capacities, they need service flexibility at the same time. We’re encouraged to see Qwest integrate Alcatel-Lucent’s 100 Gigabit Ethernet with services enablement for the edge and the metro, which also serves as high-speed transport in the core. The fact that these products use the Alcatel-Lucent FP2 silicon helps reduce risk as service providers move to 100 Gigabit interfaces within their networks.”
